Visa

a) Students from EU/EEA countries and Switzerland
do not need to apply for a visa, but
1) for a residence registration (“Meldezettel”) at the particular district municipality in Vienna and
2) for an “Anmeldebescheinigung” at the MA 35, Dresdnerstraße 93. Students must support their application by all documents required.

b)Students from Japan, New Zealand, USA, Canada and Australia
need to apply for a residence permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung) upon arrival in Austria, though they can enter Austria without a visa. The MA 35 will give you the necessary forms and will assist you in filling them in. A residence registration ("Meldezettel") is necessary upon arrival in Vienna.

c) Non EU- or EEA-citizens
need to obtain an entry visa for Austria (Authorization for Temporary Stay) and a residence permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung) before entry to Austria which are available at the Austrian embassies/consulates in the student’s home country!
A residence registration (Meldezettel) is also necessary upon arrival in Vienna too.

Required documents* for a residence permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung):

  • a valid passport (at least 12 months validity from the date of arrival)
  • a letter of admission from the Universität Wien (you will receive the declaration upon arrival)
  • adequate health insurance (against all risks, including dental care)
  • a statement, for example from a bank, of your ability to cover all living expenses during your stay. Applicants under 24years will need to have at least € 432,97 per month, students older than 24 years a minimum of € 783,99 per month for the duration of their stay
  • a rental contract for your housing in Vienna
  • if you are married, an authenticated marriage certificate
  • one passport size photograph (in colour, front face, white background)

Required documents for Student Visa (Authorization for Temporary Stay)

  • a valid passport (at least 12 months validity from the date of arrival)
  • a letter of admission as a student from the University of Vienna, Law School
  • adequate health insurance (against all risks, including dental care) covering the 1-year stay in Austria/Europe.
  • a statement, for example from a bank, confirming your ability to cover all living expenses during your stay. Applicants under 24yrs will need to have at least  € 432,97,- per month, students older than 24 years are required to have a minimum of € 783,99 per month for the duration of their stay
  • a rental contract for your housing in Vienna
  • one passport size photograph (in colour, front face, white background)

Upon arrival in Austria, all students (EU and non-EU) need to register with the municipality of Vienna for a residence registration (Meldezettel)

Required documents for a residence registration (Meldezettel)

  • a valid passport (at least 12 months validity from the date of arrival)
  • a legalized birth certificate
  • rental contract for your housing in Vienna

* All documents or translations thereof must be in either German or English! Please check the visa/residence permit rules or immigration procedures at the Austrian Embassies.

** Non-EU- or EEA-citizens:  At the Consulate please emphasise that you will be registered as an "außerordentlicher Student" at the Universität Wien. This is why you wish to apply for a 12 month European Health Insurance (against all risks, including dental care) in your home country before arriving in Austria.
