Study Trip to the United Nations Office at Vienna
Just prior to writing our master’s theses we were offered a unique opportunity to discover the insights of the legal world of the United Nations Office at Vienna. The study trip enabled us to experience the practical side of international law at the Office of Legal Affairs at the IAEA and the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).
We really appreciated the morning lecture of Ms. Peri Lynne Johnson, Legal Adviser and Director of the Office of Legal Affairs at the IAEA, on the “Legal Framework for Safe, Secure and Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy”, as well as the following discussion with Ms. Johnson and her colleagues, Mr. Ionut Suseanu and Mr. Anthony Weatherall.
Afternoon legal workshop with Ms. Lisa Tabassi, Chief of the Legal Section of the Provisional Technical Secretariat of the Preparatory Commission for the CTBTO was not less engaging. She spoke on the current legal status of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, which has not yet entered into force, as well as the current issues of the Preparatory Commission.
This study trip, complemented by general tour through the Vienna International Centre and lunch at the VIC Cafeteria, was one of the most fascinating moments of LL.M. program. As the trip was organized at the end of the study year we were able to implement the knowledge gained through the seminars into the discussions with the prominent practitioners of international law. They were very open to our questions and passionately engaged into the discussion. Thus I would highly recommend the study trip to future LL.M. students.
