VIC 2014
On July 1st, 2014 the LL.M students of the International Legal Studies postgraduate study program had the opportunity to visit the United Nations headquarters at Vienna.
First the LL.M students took a guided tour in order to learn more about the work of the United Nations. Later the students had the opportunity to get to know the work of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). The Chief of the CTBTO Legal Services Section, Dr. Sonya Rander, and other CTBTO officers warmly welcomed the LLM students.
The presentation given by the CTBTO officers focused on the role of the organization and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) in banning the use of nuclear explosions. The presentation gave an excellent overview of the importance of the CTBT and the problems that the Treaty is currently facing in order to enter into force.
Finally the officers were kind to offer the LL.M students valuable information about internship opportunities and recruitment process at the CTBTO. The LL.M students had of course also the opportunity to ask questions. It was interesting to hear about the different backgrounds of the CTBTO officers. This also gave us valuable insight into different types of career paths that are available for lawyers eager to work for international organizations.
